South Dakota Department of Health’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program
Diabetes educators provide diabetes education (also known as Diabetes Self-Management Education) to people with diabetes to help them learn how to manage the disease; topics include healthy eating, the importance of being active, how to monitor one’s diabetes, how to take medication properly, how to solve problems and cope, and how to reduce risks.

Services provided to adults with severe and persistent mental illness include: residential/transitional services; programs of assertive community treatment (intensive services to individuals with extensive histories of hospitalizations); Continuous Assistance, Rehabilitation and Education (CARE) Program (treatment, rehabilitation, and support services); crisis intervention; Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH) Program; psychiatric/medication management; emergency services; and outpatient services. Children’s services include in-home individual therapy; in-home family education/support/therapy; out-of-home therapy that can be provided in the child’s school, clinic setting, or neutral location; crisis Intervention; case management; assessment and evaluation; psychological evaluation; and group therapy.

South Dakota Department of Human Services’ Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired
This division provides the following programs: Business Enterprise Program, which is a group of independent businesses providing services in public buildings and private industry, allowing opportunities for citizens who are legally blind to become independent and self-sufficient through the running of a small business; Independent Living, which provides services to people who are visually impaired/blind in their home communities and teaches the essential skills of blindness needed to continue to live and work as safely, independently, and comfortably as possible;
Radio Talking Book; and vocational rehabilitation services, which includes vocational counseling, training in work skills, skills of blindness training, job site accommodations such as special equipment or changing how a job is done, medical services such as laser treatment or corrective surgery, job placement, and employer services or technical assistance on how employers can better meet the needs of employees with disabilities.
