Communications Associate (Nov. 2, 2021)

The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) www.aahd.us is a cross disability national non-profit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to promoting public health initiatives for children and adults with disabilities.  AAHD accomplishes its mission through research, education, policy and public awareness efforts at the federal, state and community level.  AAHD strives to reduce health disparities in people with disabilities, advocate for full community inclusion and accessibility.  The official journal of AAHD is the Disability and Health Journal (www.disabilityandhealthjnl.com).

The AAHD Communications Associate has a lead role in communication planning and implementation for AAHD including the identification of target audiences, key messages, development of communication assets, selection of communication strategies (including, but not limited to, social media, electronic and print media, and/or video production), and evaluation of communication activities.

The Communication Associate will:

  • Monitor social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Ensure that all channels have regular activity and relevant content, and there is ongoing audience engagement.
  • Integrate new channels, or new features to existing channels, as needed.
  • Employ strategies to increase AAHD outreach and visibility with the public, such as increasing followers on social media channels and increasing quality and quantity of web site traffic (search engine optimization).
  • Draft content for newsletter, blogs, videos, websites, and press releases as requested by staff.
  • Manage online and print publicity, and paid advertising on Facebook.
  • Monitor AAHD website key pages and sections, including the home page, news & features on the AAHD website.
  • Periodically review the entire AAHD website to ensure it stays fresh, current, and in the same general voice.
  • Collect and analyze communication metrics and deliver evaluation reports in a timely fashion, as requested.

The Communication Associate will participate in AAHD staff meetings, AAHD team meetings, and funded project-specific meetings.  Participate in program activities as needed to understand AAHD programs, obtain pictures and stories, and communicate impact to target audiences.  The Communication Associate must be ready and willing to “jump in” when and where needed to support important organizational activities.

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of theories of communication, excellent writing and editing skills, familiarity with team-based approaches to work, and experience in the development and editing of project deliverables such as reports and communication assets.  Familiarity with grant writing processes is a plus.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications or Related Field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least two years working in communications/marketing and/or nonprofit or university setting, with specific experience related to the following: Online communications/marketing, including social media and email marketing.
  • Digital graphic design and website development and management (WordPress preferred).
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to tailor writing for different contexts and audiences.
  • Strong attention to detail, and ability to work under multiple priorities and deadlines.

Administrative Manager (Grants and Contracts)

The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) www.aahd.us is a cross-disability national nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to ensuring health equity and inclusion for people with disabilities.  AAHD accomplishes its mission through research, education, policy and knowledge translation efforts at the national, state and community level.  AAHD strives to reduce health disparities for people with disabilities, advocate for full community inclusion and full accessibility.

AAHD is seeking a part time Administrative Manager who is skilled in managing and administering federal contracts and grants, primarily from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), as well as private foundation grants and contracts. Duties will include managing and tracking monthly financial budgetary expenses/revenues, collaborating with project staff on progress reports, ensuring compliance with federal regulations, drawing down payments using the federal PMS system, educating staff on grants/contracts policies and procedures and generating regular financial reports, as requested by staff.

The ideal candidate for this role should have experience with HHS federal contracts and grants and superior organizational skills

The position is located in our Rockville, MD office and is a flexible hybrid position, to include remote and on-site responsibilities. The Administrative Manager will report directly to the AAHD Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform accurate financial reporting on grants/contracts and other awards
  • Utilize PMS to download funds
  • Working with federal agency staff.
  • Support HHS financial reporting requirements
  • Manage budgetary timelines
  • Import expenditures into financial reports
  • Generate project expense reports

Grants Manager Responsibilities:

  • Degree in business administration, accounting, finance or equivalent
  • Methodical and strategic thinking
  • Excellent communication, organizational and project management skills
  • Budgeting and accounting experience
  • Computer literacy
  • Knowledge of federal auditing policies
