Marshall Islands: A Mental Health Policy has now been drafted and the National Focal Contact, Marita Edwin is now taking this policy forward with the Minister of Health and the President. The Pacific Partnership for Deaf-Blind Technical Assistance Services (PDB)
PDB represents a partnership between the Pacific Outreach Initiative at the Center on Disability Studies, University of Hawaii and the outlying Pacific Island nations/jurisdictions of American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia (Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Yap), Guam, Republic of Palau and Republic of the Marshall Islands. The project works to increase the capacity of educational agencies to improve the results for children and young adults who are deaf-blind and their families to live, attend school, play, work and have friends in their communities.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s “SAMHSA Awards 25 Grants Totaling $190 Million for Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Programs” press release, July 24, 2009
According to this SAMHSA website, the Marshall Islands received $946,134 in federal funds in 2009 to establish prevention policies, conduct needs assessments and begin to set up evidence-based programs in 10 local communities.

Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC)
According to the SPRC, in past years, the Marshall Islands have implemented health and education and promotion campaigns regarding mental health and suicide prevention in schools and community groups such as youth groups and churches. The SPRC reports that the program on Alcohol and Substance Abuse prevention conducts training with youth and community groups. As well, information is distributed through radio programs and interviews featuring the relationship between suicide and alcohol and other substance abuse. Maternal and Child Health in collaboration with the Division of Human Services will conduct community needs assessments on activities aiming to prevent suicide.

Women United Together Marshall Islands (WUTMI)
WUTMI is a chartered non-government, not-for-profit organization that works to advance the causes and improve the lives of Marshallese women and their families. Its activities include convening women conferences, seminars and workshops regularly; providing technical support in governance, program development, project formulation and implementation toward its membership through individual consultations or group sessions; conducting assessments and surveys to assess prevalence of issues such as voter awareness and domestic violence; sponsoring or conducting workshops to promote awareness about cultural, education, environmental, and health issues; and providing awareness-raising or counseling sessions in areas such as early childhood developmental guidance to teen mothers and counseling to women on substance abuse, domestic violence, and other topics. Projects include Parents as Teachers, which strives to enhance school readiness for children up to 5 years of age and increase parents’ competence and confidence in giving the child the best possible start in life by promoting a strong parent-child relationship and providing a means for early detection of potential learning problems; Violence Against Women, a community and government education initiative to increase understanding of this issue among the general public and community and government leaders to ensure the development of response protocols; Gender Equality in Leadership (GEL), which provided funding for research on voter knowledge and behavior, a national conference to sensitize voters to women leaders and discuss what basic civic education needs exist in the Marshall Islands, and the development of a media campaign and gender-sensitive school curriculum; Women in Leadership Media Campaign, designed to enhance the GEL project by researching traditional women’s leadership roles and conducting a media campaign based on that research using television, print, radio and newspapers; the Sustainable Livelihood Project, a pilot project aimed at creating income generating opportunities for outer island women by purchasing, distributing, and selling Marshallese handicrafts in Majuro and Honolulu; The Substance Abuse Prevention Project (Bobrae Project), which is under the cooperative agreement between Ministry of Finance, Republic of the Marshall Islands and the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to help reduce problems caused by substance abuse and drinking and to implement strategic prevention activities in communities and villages throughout the atolls (from July 1st, 2009 through June 30, 2013); and the Food and Agriculture Organization, which strives to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, and work on a global partnership for development.
