American Association on Health and Disability along with Susan G Komen foundation teams up to launch ‘Project Accessibility USA: Removing Barriers for women with Disabilities

Why is it that women with disabilities are at an increased risk of breast cancer mortality and are significantly less likely than women without a disability to receive a clinical breast exam (CBE) and recommended mammogram screenings?
For these 16 million women in the United States living with a sensory, physical and mental disability, Susan G. Komen and AAHD have teamed up again, this time to launch Project Accessibility USA: Removing Barriers for Women with Disabilities (https://aahd.us/initiatives/project-accessibility-usa/ ). It is their relentless effort towards this cause of preventing breast cancer among women with disability that they are succeeding in changing the status truly ensuring access to quality breast cancer care for all.
AAHD is collaborating with Komen Affiliates across the country to identify local grantees that provide mammography screening services and set up site visits (at no cost to grantees) to support clinic staff to ensure physical accessibility of their clinics. They will also provide user-friendly technical assistance about meeting the needs of women with disabilities, helping the clinics serve women with disabilities in their communities to ensure all women receive recommended screenings.
Additionally, Komen and AAHD are working to develop a completely free, online Breast Health Accessibility Resource Portal with modules, videos and materials that will be accessible to Komen grantees around the globe, and will improve their ability to care for women with disabilities. AAHD is also developing innovative and engaging interactive educational on-line training and professional development modules to increase staff awareness regarding mammography accessibility for women with disabilities. Access to material on the new on-line Breast Health Accessibility Resource Portal is currently being developed for use by all Komen grantees.
